India has begun flying home hundreds of its nationals who recently fled from a sprawling cyber-scam compound in neighbouring Myanmar after its army raided the site. The first group, numbering around 270 Indians, departed from Thailand’s Mae Sot town on Thursday, en route to India.
The complex known as KK Park, on the outskirts of Myawaddy in Myanmar’s Kayin State near the Thai border, is alleged to have served as a major centre for online fraud, illegal gambling and human-trafficking operations. It drew in workers from dozens of countries under false job offers and forced them into scam operations.
After the mid-October raid by Myanmar’s military, which reportedly included explosions and partial demolition of the compound, over 1,500 people from 28 nations fled into Thailand. Thai authorities set up temporary processing camps in Mae Sot to accommodate them, while India coordinated with its missions in Thailand and Myanmar for the evacuation of its citizens.
This repatriation marks India’s latest effort in response to a pattern of South Asian nationals being lured abroad with promises of lucrative tech or office jobs, only to find themselves trapped in illegal “scam-factory" compounds. Many such operations in Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos are estimated by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to generate nearly US$40 billion in annual profits.
New Delhi has also warned citizens to exercise caution when accepting overseas job offers, emphasising that visa-free travel to Thailand or neighbouring countries should not be used for employment and advising thorough verification of recruiters and employers.
