India produced a commanding display to thrash arch-rivals Pakistan 7-1 in their return-leg FIH Pro League game in London on Friday.

Coming into the contest, India had suffered a setback against hosts England, drawing 2-2 in regulation time before losing 1-4 in the shootout. Earlier in the tournament, India had edged Pakistan 4-3 in a thrilling encounter.

Pakistan struck first in the 13th minute when Abu Mahmood converted their only penalty corner of the first half with a powerful drag-flick. India responded seven minutes later as Sukhjeet Singh deflected skipper Harmanpreet Singh’s PC flick into the net.

The Indian skipper then put his team ahead in the 26th minute, hammering home another PC into the top corner. India dominated the opening half, earning six PCs compared to Pakistan’s solitary chance.

India tightened their grip after the break. Successive PCs early in the third quarter resulted in a penalty stroke, which vice-captain Hardik Singh converted. Moments later, Jugraj Singh finished off a swift counter-attack after being set up by Dilpreet Singh to make it 4-1.

Abhishek stretched the lead further in the 41st minute with a brilliant reverse-hit finish after excellent work from Sukhjeet. India continued to pile on the pressure and Rajkumar Pal capitalised on a rebound from a series of PCs to add the sixth goal.

Dilpreet completed the rout in the 54th minute, latching onto a pinpoint pass from Mandeep Singh before delicately scooping the ball past the goalkeeper.

Pakistan earned several penalty corners in the second half but repeatedly failed to trouble the Indian defence, as India sealed an emphatic six-goal victory.

India will now face England in their final game of the London leg on Sunday, June 28.
