External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday expressed gratitude to Maldives for their condolence to the families of victims and those injured in the car blast incident near Red Fort.
The explosion occurred near Gate 1 of the Red Fort Metro station in the national capital, killing eight people and injuring at least 20 others.
In a post on X, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Khaleel said: “Deeply saddened by the tragic incident near the Red Fort in New Delhi. The Maldives stands in full solidarity with the people of India during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost their loved ones, and we wish a quick recovery for those injured."
In response, Jaishankar said: “Thank you for sentiments of support FM Abdulla Khaleel."
Earlier in the day, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu expressed condolences over the deaths in the blast, saying his country stands in solidarity with India during this difficult time.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the blast in Red Fort, Delhi this evening. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and good wishes for swift recovery of the injured. The Maldives stands in solidarity with the people and Government of India in this difficult time," President Muizzu said.
Condolences also poured in from the Ambassadors of Japan, the United Kingdom, and Argentina, who extended prayers for the victims and wished a swift recovery to the injured.
At 6:52 pm on Monday, a white Hyundai i20 car pulled up to a red light at Subhas Marg, a crowded part of old Delhi, and exploded within seconds, sending shockwaves across the country. The blast came hours after the Haryana Police on Monday morning, along with Jammu and Kashmir Police, busted a “white-collar" terror module and arrested Dr Adeel Ahmad Rather and Dr Muzammil Shakil, close aides of Dr Umar.
The police also seized 2,900 kg of explosives and weapons such as assault rifles and pistols. This seizure, according to the sources, triggered Dr Umar Mohammad – a close associate of Dr Adeel believed to be radicalised – to carry out a blast in the national capital.
Eight people, including Dr Muzammil and two fellow doctors, have been arrested for allegedly being part of a white-collar terror module involving the Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, spanning across Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, officials said.
In response to the incident, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered heightened security measures across major cities in India.
