India maintained their unbeaten streak with a comfortable 4-2 win against Korea in their first Super 4 stage game of the women’s Asia Cup hockey tournament on Wednesday.
India, who topped the pool stages with seven points, scored through Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke (2nd minute), Sangita Kumari (33rd), Lalremsiami (40th), and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (59th). Yujin Kim (33rd, 53rd) netted both goals for Korea.
India will next face China on Thursday.
With Savita Punia absent, Bichu Devi Kharibam has been the primary choice for India as the goalkeeper.
Bansuri Solanki rotated against Thailand and Singapore, but Bichu played all four quarters against Japan and is expected to continue in big matches.
India earned an early penalty corner and scored first through Vaishnavi, who found the net from a rebound after Udita’s initial shot was blocked by the Korean goalkeeper.
India bagged another penalty corner shortly after, following an unsuccessful review from Korea, but squandered the opportunity. Korea faced a series of penalty corners but could not capitalise on them.
Late in the first quarter, Korea earned another penalty corner, but India’s goalkeeper Bichu made a brilliant save, keeping India ahead at half-time.
In the 22nd minute, Mumtaz’s reverse hit, set up by Neha and Navneet, was saved by the Korean goalkeeper. Three minutes into the second half, India doubled their lead with Sangita’s field goal.
However, Korea quickly responded, reducing the deficit with Yujin Kim’s penalty corner conversion.
In the 40th minute, Lalremsiami extended India’s lead to 3-1 with a superb field goal, as India continued to dominate possession in the final quarter, making frequent forays into the rival circle.
Korea managed to reduce the margin in the 53rd minute with another penalty corner conversion by Kim.
India replied promptly when Rutuja scored from a rebound in the 59th minute, sealing the victory.
