India monsoon LIVE: IMD issues red alert in Mumbai as heavy downpour causes waterlogging

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai on Saturday (August 16, 2025) as the city grapples with waterlogging in several areas.

Between August 15 and 16, 2025, Mumbai recorded heavy rainfall with average totals of 99.61 mm in the City (CT), 142.80 mm in the Eastern Suburbs (ES), and 144.57 mm in the Western Suburbs (WS).

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised residents to avoid stepping out unless necessary. Overnight showers have led to severe waterlogging in several parts of the city, including the Milan Subway, Kurla, Chembur, Gandhi Market, and Andheri.

    Amid the relentless downpour, a landslip struck Jankalyan Society in Varsha Nagar, Vikhroli Park Site (West Mumbai), claiming two lives.

    According to Dr Nikhil, AMO, Rajawadi Hospital, four injured were reported, out of which two were brought dead, and the condition of two people remains stable.
