The water level in the Yamuna river at Delhi’s Old Railway Bridge stood at 207.48 metres on Thursday (September 4, 2025) morning, even as floodwater from the raging river continued to inundate nearby areas.

The Central government has deputed an inter-ministerial team to pay detailed on-ground visits to the flood-affected districts in the Jammu region in the next four days and assess the actual scale of losses and damage caused by recent rains.

In Punjab, a fresh spell of heavy rains on Wednesday compounded the flood situation with the death toll rising to 37, while crops on 1.75 lakh hectares of land in 23 districts got damaged by the worst deluge in the State since 1988. Rescue and relief operations are underway on a war footing as help poured in from several quarters for over 3.55 lakh people in 1,655 villages, desperately looking for succour.

    A fresh spell of heavy rains compounded the flood situation in Punjab with the death toll rising to 37 on Wednesday, while crops on 1.75 lakh hectares of land in 23 districts got damaged by the worst deluge in the state since 1988.

    Rescue and relief operations are underway on a war footing as help poured in from several quarters for over 3.55 lakh people in 1,655 villages, desperately looking for succour.

    Following heavy rains, an alert has been sounded in Rupnagar and Patiala districts, urging people to remain vigilant, while all schools, colleges and universities have been closed till September 7.

    Nearly 100 outposts along Pakistan border affected by rain and floods

    Nearly 100 border outposts of the Border Security Force (BSF) and around 110 kilometres of fencing along the Pakistan border in Jammu and Punjab have been affected due to the unprecedented rain and floods in the region, a senior government official said on Wednesday (September 3, 2025).

    The official said the BSF personnel are deployed on “high ground” and are taking the help of drones and surveillance tools to keep a check on activities along the International Boundary (IB).

    Jammu floods: GoI deputes inter-ministerial team to assess actual scale of damage

    The Central government has deputed an inter-ministerial team to pay detailed on-ground visits to the flood-affected districts in the Jammu region in the next four days and assess the actual scale of losses and damage caused by recent rains.

    This was revealed at a high-level meeting chaired by Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar, and the inter-ministerial team head and National Disaster Management Authority of India Joint Secretary Col Kirti Pratap Singh here on Wednesday night.

    The meeting was held to discuss the scale of damages caused by the recent cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides in Jammu region.

    “Over the next four days, the inter-ministerial team will conduct detailed on-ground visits to the affected areas to assess the actual scale of losses and damages in the districts of Jammu division. It shall then submit a detailed report to the Government of India,” a government spokesperson said.

    The Central team comprises officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Ministry of Power, Ministry of Rural Development, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Jal Shakti, and Ministry of Finance.

    Nigambodh ghats shut in Delhi as Yamuna river breaches 207-metre mark

    Waters from a raging Yamuna submerged homes, destroyed shop goods and disrupted traffic in several areas, throwing life out of gear for thousands of people in the national capital, as the river breached the 207-metre mark on Wednesday (September 3, 2025) for the fifth time since 1963. 

    The water from the flooded river also entered the Nigambodh Ghat, Delhi’s oldest and busiest cremation ground, forcing it to halt operations.
