An Indian man living in the United States has gone viral after posting a heartbreaking story about his 80-year-old neighbour who died alone- a moment he says reflects a “sad reality" of American life.
In an emotional Instagram video, Sachin Sindhu, who lives in the US, shared that his elderly neighbour Shafar lived by himself with no family, no wife, no children around him. Sachin Sindhu said he was likely the only person who knew the man well.
Sachin Sindhu recalled growing concerned when Shafar didn’t answer his calls or come by as usual. Using a spare key, he entered the apartment- only to find the elderly man lying lifeless on his bed. Police were called and Shafar was declared dead on the spot.
“No wife, no children living with him. I was probably the only one who knew him well," Sachin Sindhu said in the video, clearly shaken.
Sachin Sindhu then reflected on loneliness among the elderly in America, saying, “One thing I really dislike about the USA is that families don’t live together here. Parents don’t want to stay with their children, and children don’t want to stay with their parents. There’s no real sense of family culture."
He compared this with India, saying that despite flaws, Indian families generally stay connected and care for their elders. He said, “In India, we take care of our elders… but that culture does not exist here. That’s why many elderly people end up living and dying in isolation."
Sachin Sindhu added that he even told police that if no family comes forward, he would arrange the funeral himself.
The video quickly spread across platforms, touching thousands who resonated with the story.
“Nice message brother… appreciate your feelings," one user commented while another wrote, “It’s heartbreaking. Same thing happened in my building."
A third user shared his own experience, “My neighbour Paul passed away last week… no family, nothing. It’s sad. He was a good man."
