A UK-based Indian man who had travelled to Gujarat to fulfill his late wife’s final wish was among the 265 people killed in Thursday’s devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent history.

Arjun Manubhai Patolia, 36, had returned to his ancestral village of Vadiya in Amreli district to immerse his wife’s ashes in River Narmada. His wife, Bharatiben, had died just a week earlier in London.

On Thursday, Patolia boarded Air India flight AI171, bound for London’s Gatwick Airport, to return home to his two young daughters—ages 4 and 8—who had remained in the UK.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad airport, slamming into a medical college hostel and igniting a massive fire.

The aircraft was carrying 242 passengers, including 53 British nationals. Only one person survived.
