However, many passengers still face challenges when selecting their preferred lower berths during online booking. Even after choosing the “lower berth preference” option, tickets often get allotted for side upper, middle, or upper berths, depending on seat availability.
Thus, it’s important for passengers to be aware of the latest rules and guidelines regarding Indian Railways’ lower berth reservation policy.
Indian Railways lower berth allocation rules
In the computerised reservation system of Indian Railways, there is a provision for allotting lower berth automatically to senior citizens and female passengers above the age of 45 years and also for the pregnant women. However, it is subject to availability of such lower berths at the time of booking.
In the trains also, ticket checking staff is authorised to allot lower berths falling vacant to such senior citizens who have been allotted middle or upper berth due to non-availability of lower berths at the time of booking.

Indian Railways lower berth sleeping time, Indian Railways lower berth seating rules
In reserved coaches, sleeping accommodation is available from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, while seating accommodation is provided for passengers during the remaining hours of the day.
However, for side lower berths allotted under Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC), both the RAC passenger and the one booked on the side upper berth share the seat for sitting purposes during the daytime.
This means that a passenger holding a side upper berth has no claim over the lower berth between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM, as that period is designated for sleeping by the lower berth occupant.
