Referring to assessments conducted across ministries, the Prime Minister said the evolving crisis has short-term, medium-term and long-term implications and requires coordinated action across sectors.
Here are the top 10 quotes by PM Modi outlining India’s concerns and response to the conflict.
1. SITUATION IN WEST ASIA “ALARMING"
“I am present in this esteemed House to discuss the ongoing conflict in West Asia and the challenges that have arisen before India due to it. The situation in West Asia at this time is concerning," PM Modi said.
Describing the developments as worrying, the Prime Minister said the war has adversely affected people’s lives and created uncertainty globally.
“The situation in West Asia is worrisome. This conflict has been going on for more than three weeks. It has a severe impact on the global economy and the lives of the people," he said.
2. STRAIT OF HORMUZ DISRUPTIONS “UNACCEPTABLE"
Highlighting concerns over disruptions in global shipping routes, the Prime Minister said attacks affecting maritime movement are unacceptable.
“Attacks on commercial ships and disruptions in international waterways like the Hormuz Strait are unacceptable. Through diplomacy, India is continuously making efforts for the safe passage of Indian ships, even in this atmosphere of war," he said.
He added that the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz has become challenging, affecting supply chains.
3. IMPACT ON INDIA’S CRUDE OIL, GAS AND FERTILISER SUPPLIES
PM Modi stressed that the region is critical for meeting India’s energy requirements.
“A significant portion of India’s crude oil, gas, and fertiliser supplies comes through the Strait of Hormuz, and the government is making every effort to ensure that the supply of petrol, diesel, and gas is not significantly affected."
He also noted that India imports nearly 60 per cent of its LPG requirement.
4. ECONOMIC, NATIONAL SECURITY AND HUMANITARIAN CHALLENGES
The Prime Minister said the conflict presents multidimensional challenges for India.
“This war has also created unforeseen challenges before India. These challenges are economic, related to national security, and humanitarian," he said.
He added that economies across the world are being affected and efforts are underway to minimise adverse impact on India.
5. CONCERNS FOR INDIANS LIVING IN GULF COUNTRIES
Emphasising the large Indian diaspora in the region, PM Modi said nearly one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries.
“Due to these various reasons, India’s concerns are naturally greater. Therefore, it is essential that a unified voice and consensus reach the world regarding this crisis from the Parliament," he said.
6. SAFETY OF INDIANS REMAINS TOP PRIORITY
The Prime Minister said the government has taken multiple steps to assist Indian citizens affected by the conflict.
“Since this war began, every Indian in the affected countries has been provided with the necessary assistance. 24×7 control rooms and emergency helplines have been set up in India and in other affected countries."
“In times of crisis, the safety of Indians is our highest priority," he said.
7. OVER 3.75 LAKH INDIANS RETURNED HOME SAFELY
Providing details of evacuation efforts, PM Modi said a large number of Indians have returned safely since the conflict began.
“Since the beginning of the war, more than 3,75,000 Indians have returned to India safely. Around 1,000 Indians have been evacuated from Iran, including over 700 medical students."
He also noted that the CBSE has cancelled examinations in Indian schools in the region to ensure students do not face disruption.
8. GOVERNMENT MONITORING SUPPLY CHAINS AND ECONOMIC IMPACT
PM Modi said an inter-ministerial group is reviewing the situation daily and working on solutions across sectors including agriculture, trade, power, fertilisers and shipping.
“Economies around the world are being affected by the current crisis, and continuous efforts are being made to ensure that India faces minimal adverse impact."
He noted that India’s macro-economic fundamentals remain strong.
9. ADEQUATE FOOD, FERTILISER AND POWER STOCKS
The Prime Minister said India has sufficient reserves of essential commodities and arrangements have been made to ensure farmers are not adversely affected.
“The country’s farmers have ensured that our food reserves are well-stocked, and adequate arrangements have been made for fertilisers to deal with such situations."
He added that adequate coal stocks are available at power plants to meet electricity demand during the summer season.
10. DIALOGUE AND DIPLOMACY ONLY WAY FORWARD
Reiterating India’s position, PM Modi said peaceful resolution through dialogue is essential.
“We have always raised our voice in favour of humanity and peace, and believe that dialogue and diplomacy are the only solutions. India is urging all sides to reach a peaceful resolution at the earliest."
He added that India is preparing for long-term implications of the crisis and has strengthened security at coastal, border, cyber and strategic installations.
