With the Onam season expected to bring a surge of expatriates to north Malabar, airlines have announced additional services from Kannur International Airport to ease passenger traffic.
IndiGo and Air India Express will operate new flights and upgrade existing services to meet the holiday demand. IndiGo has introduced extra flights on the Hyderabad-Kannur route for three weeks.
Flight 6E 7225 will leave Hyderabad at 10.15 a.m. and reach Kannur at 12.20 p.m., while the return service, 6E 7178 will depart Kannur at 12.40 p.m. and arrive in Hyderabad at 2.40 p.m. The airline has also upgraded its Delhi-Kannur route, raising the frequency from three flights a week to a daily service. Flight 6E 2108 will leave Delhi at 8.25 p.m. and arrive in Kannur at 11.25 p.m., with the return, 6E 2173, departing Kannur at 11.55 p.m. with the return 6E 2173 departing Kannur at 11.55 pm and reaching Delhi at 3.10 a.m.
To accommodate more passengers, Indigo has replaced the Airbus A320 with the larger A321 on the Mumbai-Kannur route, increasing seat capacity from 186 to 232.
Air India Express will start a new daily Bengaluru-Kannur service from September 1. Flight IX 1513 will depart Bengaluru at 8.55 am and arrive in Kannur at 10.00 a.m., while the return flight IX 1958 will leave Kannur at 10.35 a.m. and reach Bengaluru at 11.45 a.m.
The airline also plans to use Bengaluru as a transit hub to improve onward connectivity to Ahmedabad, Pune, Mumbai, Kolkata and other north Indian cities.
According to airline officials, the additional services are aimed at easing congestion during Onam and offering passengers from the Malabar region more convenient travel options.
