Minister for School Education Madhu Bangarappa, who is also Minister in-charge of Shivamogga district, inaugurated an Indira Canteen, an initiative by Karnataka government to provide food at a subsidised price, at Holehonnur in Bhadravati taluk, on Saturday. The government has sanctioned 16 Indira canteens for the district, and the one inaugurated at Holehonnur is the 12th.
The minister, speaking on the occasion, said that the canteen would help people from economically weaker sections have quality food at a low price. The customers would get breakfast at ₹5 per plate and lunch at ₹10. “The programme to provide quality food at affordable prices was launched by the Congress party when it came to power in 2013. The public make better use of the facility,” the Minister said.
Mr. Madhu Bangarappa said that the government high school at Holehonnur would be upgraded into a Karnataka Public School, where students can study up to II PU.
Shivamogga Rural MLA Sharada Puryanaik, who presided over the programme, opined the Indira Canteen would help the workers and poor people. The programme would be successful if the customers were assured of good-quality food.
K. Rangaswamy, Project Director of District Urban Development Cell, said that in the first phase, seven Indira canteens were sanctioned to Shivamogga district. In the second phase, nine more were sanctioned in 2022-23. The customers would get two varieties of food items for breakfast. Lunch and dinner would be available at ₹10.
