Internet back in two Assam districts after violence-induced shutdown

GUWAHATI

Internet services were restored on Saturday (January 24, 2026) in Assam’s Kokrajhar and Chirang districts, four days after a shutdown following violent clashes that left two people dead.

The unrest erupted on January 21 after a road accident allegedly led to the death of a Bodo tribal youth. The incident sparked mob violence, resulting in another fatality and widespread disruption. Authorities had suspended internet access as a precaution to prevent the spread of rumours and maintain law and order.

The State Home Department reviewed the situation before lifting restrictions, with the officials saying the decision was taken after a careful assessment as the security situation gradually stabilised.

A strong security presence remains in place ahead of Republic Day. Assam Police, Rapid Action Force, and Central Reserve Police Force personnel have been patrolling sensitive areas to prevent further incidents.

A senior police officer said the authorities were keeping a close watch. “The situation is under control, and we urge citizens to maintain communal harmony and cooperate with the security forces,” she said.

Authorities emphasised that vigilance would remain high, although schools, offices, and markets have resumed operations and normal life is slowly returning.
