Iran has arrested 20 people in the country’s northwestern region for allegedly being an informant of Israel. The arrests were reported by Tasnim news agency, citing a statement from the prosecutor’s office in West Azerbaijan province.

According to the report, the suspects are accused of sending location details of Iran’s military and security assets to Israel. Iranian authorities said the group had tried to pass sensitive information to Israeli forces.

Iran has multiple times announced arrests of people accused of spying, though such allegations are often made without publicly presenting evidence.

The arrests come as Israel has launched a new phase of its assault on Iran. A source briefed on Israel’s military strategy told Reuters that Israeli forces have been targeting security checkpoints based on tip-offs from informants on the ground.

A US official and an Israeli official told The Times of Israel that ongoing airstrikes across Iran are targeting members of the regime’s forces who took part in a crackdown on anti-government protesters earlier this year.

According to the officials, the aim is to make it easier for demonstrators to return to the streets once the bombing subsides.
