Iran bans sports teams from hostile countries, affecting Tractor FC, AFC Champions League and Iran World Cup 2026 games in United States amid safety and asylum tensions.

Iran announced a ban on sending national and domestic sports teams to countries it considers “hostile", citing concerns over athlete safety amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the region.
The directive, issued by the Ministry of Sports and Youth and reported by local media, follows the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel that began in late February. The ministry stated that “the presence of national and club teams in countries that are considered hostile and are unable to ensure the security of Iranian athletes and team members is prohibited until further notice," signalling an open-ended restriction on international participation in certain locations.
The decision was partly prompted by an upcoming AFC Champions League fixture involving Iranian club Tractor FC, which was scheduled to face a team from the United Arab Emirates in Saudi Arabia. Authorities cited “the publication of some news about the confrontation of the Tractor team against a team from the Emirates in Saudi Arabia" as a key factor behind the move. The ministry added that “the Football Federation and clubs will be obliged to notify the Asian Football Confederation of this matter in order to relocate the games," indicating that alternative venues may be sought.

Will Iran Play 2026 FIFA World Cup?
The development adds fresh uncertainty ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, for which Iran has already qualified. The team is currently scheduled to play group-stage matches in the United States, alongside fixtures against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. However, Iran’s participation in matches hosted in the U.S. is now in doubt.
Further complicating matters, U.S. President Donald Trump recently remarked that while Iran would be allowed to compete, concerns about “life and safety" could arise. Iranian football federation president Mehdi Taj has confirmed ongoing discussions with FIFA regarding the possibility of moving matches to Mexico.
The situation is also affected by off-field controversies, including an incident involving members of Iran’s women’s football team seeking asylum abroad.
