US President Donald Trump said Iran is eager to strike a deal with Washington but indicated that he remains dissatisfied with the proposals currently being discussed, raising fresh uncertainty over ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions between the two countries.
“So they want to make a deal, but I don’t. I’m not satisfied with it," Trump told reporters while commenting on the status of negotiations with Tehran. “Iran wants to make a deal because they have no military left, essentially."
Trump’s remarks come at a critical stage in diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilising the fragile ceasefire that followed months of military escalation involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Recent negotiations, reportedly mediated through Pakistan, have struggled to produce a breakthrough as disagreements continue over Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief and control of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to reports, Iran recently submitted a revised response to a US-backed peace proposal in an attempt to revive talks. However, American officials have suggested the proposal failed to address key US demands, particularly regarding Tehran’s nuclear activities.
Trump has repeatedly insisted that any agreement with Iran must include strict limitations on its nuclear ambitions and guarantees over maritime security in the Gulf. The US has also maintained pressure through sanctions and a continuing naval presence in the region.
The comments also come amid growing political debate inside the United States over Trump’s handling of the conflict. The administration recently claimed that hostilities with Iran had effectively “terminated" following the ceasefire, even as legal and political disputes continue in Congress over presidential war powers and the future of US military involvement in the region.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high across West Asia, with shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, rising energy prices and uncertainty over future negotiations continuing to impact global markets and diplomacy.
Despite Trump’s tough rhetoric, diplomatic channels between Washington and Tehran remain open, though prospects for a final agreement appear increasingly uncertain.
