The Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has come under sharp criticism following the death of a three-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted in Tiruvallur district, triggering outrage across the state and raising fresh concerns over the safety of women and children.

The case has intensified scrutiny of the TVK government, particularly in light of its recent launch of the “Singappenn" women’s safety force, an initiative announced by CM Vijay soon after assuming office to strengthen protection mechanisms for women and girls.

TVK Government Under Fire

Opposition leaders condemned the crime and questioned the government’s ability to curb sexual offences, which they said have become a growing concern in the state.

Reacting sharply to the incident, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi launched a blistering attack on the ruling TVK, saying the regime is being “run by those who don’t know the meaning of the word responsibility."

DMK’s Kanimozhi Slams Vijay Regime

She added that the incident has left her heart “frozen in shock." In a post on X, she stated, “Hearing the news that a three-year-old child was subjected to sexual abuse by anti-social elements in Kummidipoondi and thrown into a bush has left my heart frozen in shock. All women, please take care of yourselves and your children safely. This state is being governed in such a way that one begins to doubt whether there is any government at all. In a regime run by those who don’t know the meaning of the word ‘responsibility,’ what can the public do other than ensure their own safety?"

Opposition Demands Tough Action

DMK leader TKS Elangovan called for stronger intervention by the government and stringent punishment for those responsible.

“The government should be strict on these incidents. Punishment should be severe. This is a social issue. The government should concentrate on it," he said.

Annamalai Condemns Incident

Meanwhile, former BJP leader K Annamalai also condemned the incident and urged the Vijay-led government to take immediate action.

“The news of a 3-year-old girl child falling victim to sexual assault near Kummidipoondi in Thiruvallur district and succumbing to her injuries despite treatment has caused profound shock and grief. I urge the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate action on this matter. Owners employing laborers from North Indian states must furnish the government with comprehensive details, including how many such laborers are present, in which cities they are located, their native places, current workplaces, and places of residence," he said in a post on X.

He further claimed that the state was witnessing a rise in the involvement of individuals from North India in crime against women, sharing a list of such incidents.

“Over the past few months, there has been a noticeable increase in the involvement of individuals from North Indian states in crimes occurring across various parts of Tamil Nadu," he added.

BJP Criticises TVK Over Crime Against Women

Furthermore, BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan launched a scathing attack on the state government, accusing it of failing to ensure the safety of children despite repeated assurances.

“The incident in Kummidipoondi where a three-year-old child was sexually assaulted and thrown into a bush is heart-wrenching… In Tamil Nadu, which is supposed to nurture those who come. The fact that a child from another state was crushed and discarded fills us with pain… The words of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister @CMOTamilnadu , who keeps saying he will ensure the safety of girl children, are just floating in the air…," she tweeted.

“The lionesses of Tamil Nadu have been unable to rein in these human wolves that bite and maul tiny children.. Unable to even track them down… We strongly condemn this. The fact that sexual violence is turning into an ongoing saga is a matter of extreme concern… I urge the Tamil Nadu government to take an iron-fisted approach and punish these merciless human beasts….," she further wrote.

The incident has placed the spotlight on the effectiveness of the government’s recently launched safety initiatives, with critics arguing that stronger implementation and enforcement are needed to prevent such crimes.

Rape Triggers Outrage, 1 Held

The rape incident occurred in Gummidipoondi on Sunday. According to police, the child was found with serious injuries in a bushy area near the SIPCOT industrial zone and was rushed to hospital. She succumbed to her injuries during treatment on Monday.

Police said a migrant worker from Bihar has been arrested in connection with the case. The victim’s family, also originally from Bihar, has been residing in the area for work.

As per news reports, the accused was reportedly apprehended by locals before being handed over to the police. Authorities said that the investigation is ongoing and that three other individuals are being questioned as part of the probe. However, police said there is currently no evidence to suggest the involvement of more than one person in the alleged crime.

As the investigation continues, the case has sparked renewed debate over law and order, child protection, and the accountability of the state government in addressing crimes against women and children.
