Star French racing driver Isack Hadjar ignored Kimi Antonelli’s approach to apologise, after the duo made contact during the Chinese Grand Prix sprint race, which visibly left the former disappointed, with his Red Bull having suffered damage.
Antonelli began the Chinese Grand Prix sprint from P2 alongside pole-sitter teammate George Russell, while Hadjar started in P10 on soft tyres, compared to the medium compounds of the cars ahead.
Antonelli had a poor start, losing multiple positions, while Hadjar moved up to P8. Approaching Turn 6, the two ran side by side when the former understeered into Hadjar, shredding the RB22’s bodywork and sending carbon fibre flying.
Antonelli received a 10-second penalty for causing the collision, which he served during his pit stop under the safety car. Hadjar’s progress was hampered, with floor damage slowing his race after the impact.
After parking in the Parc Fermé, Antonelli exited his car and approached Hadjar, who remained in the Red Bull. He apologised and extended his hand, hoping Hadjar would accept it.
But Hadjar dismissed Antonelli’s apology and refused to shake hands, rebuking him instead. The incident was captured on the former’s Red Bull onboard camera. Watch the video here:
Meanwhile, George Russell claimed a ‘pretty fun’ sprint race win at the Chinese GP on Saturday, March 14, further asserting his early-season dominance by finishing ahead of both Ferraris and extending his championship lead.
Russell enjoyed a ding-dong battle in the opening laps with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, as the pair traded places at the front multiple times.
Later he had to fend off the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc after a late safety car, with the Monegasque driver coming home second with Hamilton in third.
