Amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran in the Middle East, a US military aircraft known as the ‘Doomsday Plane’ was seen taking off on Tuesday, raising fresh concerns about Washington’s readiness for a potential large-scale conflict.
This aircraft, known as the E-4B Nightwatch, is a critical asset designed to maintain US’s final military and political command during a nuclear attack. The sudden flight has sparked speculation about whether the United States is preparing for possible action against Iran.
The E-4B Nightwatch departed from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana before 6 PM and, after more than four hours in the air, landed at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland shortly after 10 PM. The flight was notable for using a new callsign, ‘ORDER01’, instead of the usual ‘ORDER6’, which had never been used before.
Is US Preparing For War?
Although E-4B aircraft routinely fly to ensure operational readiness, this specific sortie stood out due to its timing. The plane’s departure coincided with President Donald Trump‘s demand for an ‘unconditional surrender’ from Iran and pledged full support for Israel’s military actions. In a firm response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, “This country will not surrender to anyone—neither in war nor under an imposed peace proposal."
At least 224 people have been killed in Iran following recent Israeli airstrikes targeting the country’s nuclear facilities.
What Is The ‘Doomsday Plane’?
The E-4B Nightwatch, commonly known as the ‘Doomsday Plane’ or ‘Flying Pentagon’, functions as a secure mobile command center designed to withstand nuclear attacks and electromagnetic pulses. Outfitted with 67 satellite dishes and antennas, it enables global communication and ensures uninterrupted connectivity for the President, the Defense Secretary, and senior military leaders during national emergencies.
The aircraft features three decks, including a briefing room, a strategic conference room, a communication zone, and 18 bunks for rest. It can operate in the air for more than 35 hours without landing, thanks to its in-flight refuelling capability.
When Was It Active Earlier?
Historically, the E-4B Nightwatch has been active during significant crises. President George Bush used a similar plane during 9/11, and in 1995, the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) team was transported in it during Hurricane Opal. The sight of the Doomsday Plane in the sky often signals a looming crisis for the United States.
Whether this recent flight was a mere practice run or a prelude to a more significant event remains to be seen. However, the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran hints at a pivotal moment, with the US fully prepared for any eventuality.
