Israel strongly rejected a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution on Friday that overwhelmingly endorsed a declaration aimed at advancing the creation of a Palestinian state and promoting a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oren Marmorstein criticised the UNGA’s decision, calling the assembly a “political circus detached from reality." In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Marmorstein highlighted that the resolution “contains dozens of clauses" but fails to label Hamas as a terrorist organisation. He dismissed the declaration as a symbolic gesture with no practical impact.

The resolution, formally titled the New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, was approved by 142 countries. It outlines a roadmap including a ceasefire, the establishment of Palestinian statehood, the disarmament of Hamas, and the normalisation of relations between Israel and Arab nations.

The declaration specifically calls for Hamas to end its rule in Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority with international support, as a key step toward achieving a sovereign and independent Palestinian state.

The vote reflected broad international support, with countries such as India backing the measure. However, 10 countries voted against the resolution, including Israel, the United States, Czechia, Hungary, and Argentina, while 12 others abstained.

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon denounced the resolution as “a one-sided declaration" that will not advance peace but will instead “weaken this Assembly’s credibility." Danon described the move as “not diplomacy, but theatre."

The US also condemned the resolution. Morgan Ortagus, Counselor for the US Mission to the UN, called the vote a “misguided and ill-timed publicity stunt" that risks undermining ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. Ortagus went further to describe the resolution as “a gift to Hamas," suggesting it emboldens the militant group rather than fostering peace.

The timing of the vote is significant, occurring just weeks before a high-level UN summit on September 22, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to formally recognise a Palestinian state at this summit, highlighting growing international momentum behind the Palestinian cause.
