Israel on Friday returned the bodies of 30 Palestinians, indicating that the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement is moving forward. The development, confirmed by the Red Cross and hospital officials, comes a day after Palestinian militants in Gaza handed over the remains of two hostages to Israel.

As per a report by the Associated Press, a doctor at Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis confirmed receiving the ‘unidentified’ bodies. The transfer was facilitated by the teams of the Red Cross.

Ahmed al-Farra, head of the paediatric unit at Nasser Hospital, confirmed to the AP on Friday morning that the hospital received the unidentified bodies of 30 Palestinians from Israel.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, these bodies returned by Israel bring the total count of returned bodies to 225.

Earlier, on Thursday, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the two bodies had been received by Israeli forces via the Red Cross in Gaza.

The remains have been confirmed as those of Sahar Baruch and Amiram Cooper, both taken hostage during the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas that set off the war.

Since the start of the ceasefire, Hamas has returned the remains of 17 hostages, with 11 others still in Gaza and set to be turned over under the terms of the agreement.The ceasefire, which began October 10, is aimed at ending the most destructive war ever fought between Israel and Hamas.In the October 2023 attack on Israel, Hamas-led militants killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others hostage.

As per the official data, Israel’s military offensive has killed more than 68,600 Palestinians in Gaza in the last two years.
