In a major boost to its military capabilities, Israel is set to acquire advanced smart bombs from the United States, known for their pinpoint accuracy and ability to destroy enemy hideouts. Valued at a staggering $510 million, the deal comes amid escalating global conflicts—from the Russia-Ukraine war to unrest in Gaza and tensions with Iran—where nations continue to expand their arsenals despite widespread destruction.
How Much Is The Deal Worth?
On June 30, 2025, the US approved a major defence deal amounting to $510 million for Israel. As part of this deal, Israel is purchasing over 7,000 JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) guidance kits from the US. These kits are designed to enhance the precision strike capabilities of the Israeli Air Force. The deal was formalised following a notification from the Defense Security Cooperation Agency to the US Congress.
Can JDAMs Shock Military Powers Like Russia And China?
The JDAM system is often compared to Russia’s KAB-500S-E and China’s LS-6, although it is considered more reliable. Operational since 1999, the JDAM system was tested during the Kosovo war. Interestingly, each kit costs $25,000–30,000, significantly less than the Tomahawk cruise missile. In June, Israel deployed thousands of JDAM-equipped bombs against Iran, following which it secured this deal with the US.
What Are The Contents Of The Deal?
The deal includes 3,845 KMU-558B/B kits for the BLU-109 bunker buster bomb and 3,280 KMU-572F/B kits for the 500-pound MK-82 bomb. Additionally, the deal provides for engineering, logistics, and technical support. These kits will enable Israel to convert its older, unguided bombs into smart bombs using GPS and INS-based guidance systems, allowing for meter-level accuracy in all weather conditions.
What Are KMU-558B/B And KMU-572F/B?
The KMU-558B/B is designed for the BLU-109 bunker-buster, weighing approximately 907kg, capable of penetrating deep into concrete or ground before detonating. The GPS/INS system and control fins ensure precise targeting even in adverse weather. The KMU-572F/B kit, tailored for the 500-pound MK-82 bomb, is intended for precision light attack missions. It also features a GPS/INS guidance system, effective under conditions of fog, smoke, or rain.
