Ranchi: Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), V Narayanan, on Wednesday said India has 56 satellites in space. The aim was to increase this number threefold over the next three years, he added.Addressing the students during BIT Mesra’s convocation, he said, “ISRO also aims to bring India on par with any country in the world by 2040 in terms of launchers, satellites, and their applications.
This effort is part of contributing towards achieving Viksit Bharat by 2047.”Narayanan said the ISRO would launch a 6,000-kg communication satellite for the USA next month. ISRO is working towards setting up a space station by 2025.He said that the first model of the station would be launched in 2028. India, being the only country to achieve a soft landing on the southern pole of the moon, is moving towards sending human beings to space under the Gaganyaan projects and to the moon.From a situation where satellite parts were carried on bullock carts and bicycles, ISRO has come a long way and launched 433 satellites for 30 countries from Indian sites and rockets. The organisation has built and launched 133 satellites of various kinds.On January 16, India achieved space docking of two satellites. The space programme is contributing towards the country’s security and development. The satellites were utilised during Operation Sindoor.
Satellites are also being used for communication, meteorology, disaster warning and mitigation, telemedicine, television networks, connectivity, and other purposes, he informed.The convocation was also addressed by Chancellor of BIT Mesra, CK Birla, Vice Chancellor Professor Indranil Manna, and others. As many as 1000 undergraduate students, 320 postgraduates, 75 PhD scholars, and 65 diploma holders were awarded in the function.
