US President Donald Trump has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that a peace agreement with Iran could be signed within days, according to a senior US official, as quoted by Axios.

“This is the deal. It’s a great deal, and it’s time to end this war," Trump told Netanyahu during a phone call. The conversation came as officials in both Washington and Tehran said an agreement was close, although not yet finalised.

According to US officials, Netanyahu appeared to recognise that he could not prevent Trump from moving ahead with the deal. During the call, the Israeli leader reportedly told Trump that he trusted him to ensure the final agreement addressed concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.

Pressure on Netanyahu?

The development marks a significant shift from Netanyahu’s earlier position. From the beginning of the conflict, he had argued that the war could help bring about regime change in Tehran.

Now, with elections expected within months, his political rivals have accused him of turning Israel into a “vassal state" by accepting Trump’s peace terms.

Officials said Netanyahu had planned major strikes on Iranian energy and infrastructure facilities earlier this week, but Trump stopped the move at the last moment. Trump’s public announcement that a deal had effectively been reached reportedly caught Netanyahu by surprise.

What are Israel’s concerns?

While Israeli leaders have avoided publicly criticising Trump, officials remain sceptical about the proposed agreement. One concern is that Iran could use the deal to stabilise its economy through oil sales while delaying meaningful concessions on its nuclear programme.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Trump was pursuing an agreement based on American interests but stressed that Israel expected shared principles regarding Iran’s nuclear programme, missiles and regional proxy groups to be protected. Katz also said Israel retained the ability to act independently to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Israeli officials are also worried that a ceasefire covering Lebanon could limit future operations against Hezbollah.

US says Iran deal in ‘very close’

The New York Times quoted a senior US administration official as saying that Washington expects to sign a framework agreement with Iran within the next few days, although discussions are not yet complete.

The official estimated the chances of success had risen from around 75 per cent to between 80 and 85 per cent. The proposed memorandum of understanding would establish a 60-day ceasefire and begin further negotiations on sanctions relief and Iran’s nuclear programme.

According to the US official, the agreement would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the US blockade of Iranian ports.

The administration hopes the process will eventually lead to Iran dismantling its nuclear programme, surrendering enriched uranium to the United States for destruction and establishing a mechanism to enforce the deal.

The US official stressed that Iran would receive no immediate economic benefits simply by signing the agreement. Financial relief would only be provided if Tehran fulfilled its obligations, including handing over highly enriched uranium and dismantling nuclear facilities.

The official also said the agreement could eventually form the basis of a broader regional peace framework involving Israel, Lebanon, Iran and Gulf states, while offering Iran a path towards sanctions relief and reintegration into the global economy.
