A two-day organic mango and jackfruit fair, organised by Sahaja Samrudha and Rotary Club of Hubballi, began at Bhagini Mandal in Hubballi with chairman of Legislative Council Basavaraj Horatti inaugurating it on Saturday.
Addressing a gathering after the inauguration, Mr. Horatti said that fruit fairs would help in bringing value to jackfruits and said that such fairs should be organised everywhere.
Narrating his own experience as a jackfruit farmer, he said that marketing jackfruit was a challenge. “Fruits and vegetables grown organically are good for health, especially for children. Jackfruit grown without the use of chemicals can help maintain our health,” he said.
Rotary Club president Bapugouda S. Biradar and secretary A.V. Sankanur said that the initiative would help bring value to fruits like jackfruits.
Presiding over the programme, director of Sahaja Samrudha G. Krishna Prasad said that the demand for quality jackfruit varieties, especially red jackfruit, was growing. “Farmers should seize this opportunity and consider cultivating jackfruit. The government should provide necessary support and appropriate markets to farmers taking up jackfruit cultivation,” he said.
The two-day fair features an exhibition of various jackfruit varieties. Mango, jackfruit, and other fruit saplings are also available for sale. Seeds of various crops and organic products are also on sale.
