James Gunn reveals why he chose David Corenswet among 30 others; recalls the audition being amazing - Deets Inside

‘Superman’ is about to hit the theatres, and the fans are all ready with the capes and hopes. As the audience eagerly anticipates the thrilling film, the director, James Gunn, recently opened up about why he chose David Corenswet out of all the auditions.

James Gunn reckons David Corenswet was easy to choose...

In an interview with Pinkvilla, the 58-year-old stated that for the role of the superhero, David was chosen among 30 other actors. Just like the character, Gunn said that Corenswet is ‘square’ in real life as well, which made the creator hand-pick. “I think anybody that sees the movie knows why David Corenswet is Superman. David is somebody who I saw in my friend Ti West's film Pearl, and I thought that guy should audition for Superman,” Gunn said, before adding, “It was very interesting because people start auditioning usually with self-tapes that they send into John Papsidera, our casting director.”

30 tapes for Superman and 30 tapes for Lois Lane

James further added that they received 30 self-tapes for Superman and 30 more for Lois Lane, but within the first day, both David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan were reading for their respective characters. “Now, Lois, I thought I would find it because Lois is not as physically restrictive, where Superman is very specific. And I was afraid of not being able to find the right Superman. Luckily, I saw David reading on the first day, and he was amazing,” he added.

James Gunn continued that the 31-year-old sounded a lot like Superman in his first scene with Brosnahan. “One of the main scenes that the actors were reading from was a scene where Superman is arguing with Lois about his place in the world,” he said, and added, “David was great; when you see him in that scene in the movie, you realise this guy's just a fantastic actor, and he also happens to look and sound a lot like Superman.

He's also a square in real life, like Superman. He listens to old jazz standards and swing music.”
