Jamia Millia Islamia hosts regional workshop on IPR and technology transfer

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif, hosted a Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Technology Transfer on 23rd June 2025.

The event was organised by the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell and AICTE. The workshop brought together participants from over 20 higher education institutions, including faculty members, students, researchers, and innovation leaders. The programme began a welcome address by Prof. Rihan Khan Suri, Director of CIE and President of IIC 7.0, who highlighted the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in academics. Sh Abhishek Ranjan from the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell gave an overview of national initiatives supporting innovation and the importance of Institutional Innovation Councils (IICs). Registrar Prof Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi congratulated CIE for organising the event and emphasised the importance of IPR awareness in higher education. He noted that while Jamia has filed several patents, more efforts are needed to support the commercialisation of innovations.

"Understanding IPR is not just important—it is essential for every researcher, innovator, and budding entrepreneur. Protecting innovation through patents, copyrights, and trademarks is the first step toward creating sustainable, scalable solutions. While Jamia has several patents filed, a large number of innovations still await commercialization, primarily due to lack of awareness about IPR and tech transfer.

I appreciate the support of the MoE’s Innovation Cell and AICTE in promoting this much-needed awareness”, Prof Rizvi added. Prof Kafeel Ahmad, Dean of Research and Innovation, JMI, spoke on the link between IPR and nation-building. Chavi Garg from the Indian Patent Office explained the patent process, while Shri Pradeep Dhage discussed technology transfer and industry linkages. The event also included a student showcase of innovative ideas and ended with a vote of thanks by Prof S M Muzakkir. The workshop reinforced JMI’s ongoing commitment to promoting innovation and practical application of academic research.
