Jamshedpur Implements Comprehensive Garbage Collection and Segregation in Slum Areas

Jamshedpur: The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has taken measures aimed at the total cleaning of municipal garbage from the slum areas. The JNAC deputy town commissioner (DMC), Krishna Kumar, said that 100 per cent door-to-door collection of domestic waste and cleaning of clogged drains must be ensured by the garbage cleaning firms in the slums.

He said that a special drive will be launched in the bastis to inform households about the segregation of dry and wet waste at the source point.JNAC will ensure that all houses receive two separate bins for disposing of wet and dry refuse. “The residents will be informed about the benefits of dumping wet and dry waste in separate bins, and they will be encouraged to follow the norm," Krishna Kumar said.Further, the contractors tasked with the collection, lifting, and disposal of municipal waste have been asked to ensure there is no shortage of resources, including workforce, vehicles, and machines.

In cramped alleys where tippers cannot move around, the contractors have to deploy tricycles to reach every house for garbage collection. Besides, they have to increase the number of cleaners so that every unit in the slum is attended to daily, officials said. The vehicles placed for disposing of the garbage will have to be equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) device so that every vehicle on the disposing job will be under surveillance on a real-time basis, Kumar said.

Additionally, the Swachhta App of the civic body will be effectively used by the sanitation supervisors and managers for daily reporting of the cleaning work. The slum areas in Sonari, Kadma, Shastrinagar, Bagunnagar, Birsanagar, Baridih, and Golmuri have been identified for a focused approach in disposing of the garbage. Notably, with 80 tippers, the JNAC collects 170 tonnes of garbage from over 40,000 households daily from the non-Tata Steel command area.Buoyed by the third cleanest city ranking in Swachh Survekshan in 2024-25, JNAC is taking different steps at intervals to ensure it remains in the bracket of the top three clean cities of India in the next edition of the survey, officials said.
