Japan’s newly appointed prime minister has hinted at a possible shift in the country's decades-old non-nuclear principles. Sanae Takaichi raised the speculation that she might seek to revise a ban on the entry of such weapons into its territory.Takaichi has said that she could not say whether those principles would be maintained in an upcoming revision of Japan's security strategy. Tokyo’s non-nuclear principles, in effect since 1967, prohibit the possession, production or introduction of nuclear weapons into its territory."I cannot make a definitive statement or say that it will be written in such a manner," she said in parliament on Nov. 10.In a 2024 book, before she took office, Takaichi, known as a China hawk, described that principle as not realistic. She has argued that the US may need to bring nuclear weapons into Japan to deter rivals such as China. Japan, like neighbouring South Korea, is protected under Washington's so-called nuclear umbrella. Some Japanese lawmakers have also backed the idea that US should be allowed to bring nukes into Japan, on submarines or other platforms, to strengthen deterrence.n18oc_crux | n18oc_world SanaeTakaichi 0:00 INTRODUCTION2:38 CHINA SLAMS JAPAN FOR “ERRONEOUS MOVE ON TAIWAN”5:24 TAIWAN SLAMS CHINA’S 'WOLF WARRIOR' DIPLOMACY
