West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen has apologised to the club’s fans for the incident at Molineux after their 3-2 defeat to Wolves in the League Cup Round 2 on Tuesday.

As the team was applauding the away fans after the loss, Bowen was seen taking exception to something said in the audience. He pointed fingers at one of the fans and charged at him, attempting to jump over the advertising hoardings, only to be pulled back by teammates.

“Apologies to the fans for tonight’s reaction," Bowen said in a post on Instagram. “I’m someone who is passionate and will fight every time I step on the pitch. But I need to set a better example and you fans know how much I love you and this club! We ride through the bad times together, and I’ll see you all Sunday."

This incident only deepens to rock bottom for the Hammers. Their League Cup exit after the first game was preceded by two straight defeats to newly-promoted Sunderland and London rivals Chelsea.

There’s a worry that the team is already in a relegation battle, with pressure building on coach Graham Potter. Asked about the incident, Potter said he wasn’t aware of the details but called Bowen a “fantastic captain, servant, player and person for the club" while sending a message of unity.

“Our supporters have been fantastic," said Potter. “They are hurting because of the results we have had and Jarrod obviously cares about the club and the team. He gave everything again and it was just an exchange of views by people who care. The most important relationship at a club is between the fans and the team. We need our fans and everyone to stick together. The team is suffering at the moment. We are all hurting, I can assure you no-one is celebrating or happy about what we’re doing. We’re all in pain."

There’s a fear that the club’s once vocal supporters are going through a phase of disconnection. With under a week left in the summer transfer window, they’ll hope that the club can turn things around in time to stay up.
