Jasdan patari handicraft gets GI tag

Ahmedabad: The traditional craft of Jasdan patari has been approved for geographical indication (GI) registration by GI Registry for 2025-26, the Govt of India announced on Monday.The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) supported the GI registration under its Gramya Vikas Nidhi (GVN) through grant assistance for awareness generation, documentation, and the application process was supported by Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII). The initiative was facilitated by the Centre for Environment Education (CEE).According to the documentation submitted, Jasdan near Rajkot is known for its brass-ribbed chests called pataras (big) and pataris (small) — which are wooden boxes embellished with metalwork. A patara is typically made of teakwood and contains eight or more drawers. It is traditionally covered with brass and copper. Often on wheels, such pataras were traditionally used to store dowry and trousseau.Raman Patel from CEE Jasdan said that today 250-odd artisans working on the handicraft have formed a federation, and the GI will help them get unique recognition nationally and internationally.
