Former German centre-back Jerome Boateng’s return to Bayern Munich in a coaching role has been cancelled after there was public outrage over his inclusion in the squad, given assault accusations levelled against him in the past.

Boateng, who represented Bayern from 2011 to 2021, had explored the possibility of a short-term training stint with head coach Vincent Kompany.

However, after protests from fans of the German champions, Boateng will now have to look elsewhere to start shaping his post-playing career.

Following the recent discussion regarding myself, I have decided to focus on my issues, such as the A training license … that is where my focus is. Your focus should be solely on the pitch and on extending this 13-match winning run," Boateng wrote on his Instagram story.

Bayern cruised to a 3–0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday, October 25, extending their perfect run to 13 wins in 13 games across competitions this season.

“I am thankful to the club leadership and you, dear Vincent, for giving me trust and the opportunity to be part of that," Boateng said.

Bayern supporters protested against his proposed internship after a Munich court last year handed him a suspended fine and a warning for harming his former partner. An online petition titled ‘Setting boundaries against misogynistic violence: Jerome Boateng shouldn’t be allowed back to Bayern Munich’ gathered several thousand signatures.

The 37-year-old Boateng, who earned 76 caps for Germany between 2009 and 2018, spent a decade at Bayern after joining from Manchester City in 2011, where he had played alongside Kompany.

During his time in Munich, Boateng helped the club bag nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions League crowns.

Boateng announced his retirement last month, having last played for the Austrian team LASK Linz, where his contract was terminated in August.

These were the very same circumstances that prompted Bayern to pass on re-signing Boateng during his previous extended stint with the club two years ago.
