On August 9, as families across the country celebrated Raksha Bandhan to mark the bond between siblings, 19-year-old Arvind Kumar from Jhansi’s Chandrapura village allegedly shaved his sister’s head, strangled her, and dumped her body on a rocky hill near a stone-crusher site. A day earlier, he is believed to have lured and killed his sister’s boyfriend, 18-year-old Vishal Ahirwar, before disposing of his body nearly 40 kilometres away on the banks of the Dhasan river in Lahchura police station limits.

Bodies Found Two Days Apart

The sequence began on August 7, when Arvind and an associate, identified as Prakash Prajapati, allegedly arrived at Vishal’s house in Pathrai village under Tahruali police station. According to the victim’s family, the men persuaded Vishal to accompany them on the pretext of arranging a job in Delhi. Vishal’s father, Halke Ram, said Prakash was a known acquaintance whose relatives lived nearby, making the request appear harmless.

That evening, Vishal told his father over the phone that he was in Tahruali and might stay the night. It was the last time his family heard from him. On August 8, Lahchura police recovered the body of an unidentified youth from shrubs near the river. The corpse bore injury marks on the neck, indicating possible strangulation. The photograph of the body was later circulated on social media, eventually reaching Vishal’s relatives, who confirmed his identity on the night of August 9.

The following morning, news of another grisly discovery emerged—this time from Chandrapura village. Locals spotted the body of a young woman with a shaven head lying on a nearby hill. She was identified as Puchchu (also known as Putto) Ahirwar, Arvind’s younger sister.

A Love Story Under Siege

Police investigation revealed that Vishal and Puchchu had been in a relationship for over a year. The two first met at a relative’s home in Nunar village. Their friendship soon blossomed into romance, but it faced stiff opposition from their families, reportedly due to caste and community differences.

In January this year, the couple eloped, prompting both families to file missing person reports. They were traced by police within three days and brought back. A compromise was reached at the police station, and the couple was separated. Vishal’s family moved to Haryana in an attempt to distance him from Puchchu.

However, the two continued to communicate via phone, and their relationship persisted despite parental disapproval. Two weeks before the murders, Vishal’s family returned to the village for Raksha Bandhan festivities—a move that may have reignited tensions.

Allegations Against the Brother

According to Vishal’s father, Arvind, aided by Prakash, conspired to eliminate both lovers. Puchchu’s father, Pappu Ahirwar, admitted to the police that his son had committed the murder. “My daughter was planning to run away with her lover again. My son became enraged, shaved her head, strangled her, and dumped her body on the hill," he told investigators.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Jhansi’s SSP BBGTS Murthy confirmed that both murders are being investigated as connected cases. “Preliminary investigation suggests that the girl’s brother committed the crime. We have detained three suspects, including the youth who took Vishal away. The brother is currently absconding, and three police teams have been deployed to track him," the SSP said.

SP (Rural) Dr. Arvind Kumar added that forensic teams have collected evidence from both crime scenes. “Post-mortem examinations will help establish the exact cause of death. We are probing all angles, including the honour killing theory, given the opposition to their relationship," he said.

A Shock for the Villages

The double murder has sparked outrage and disbelief in the villages involved. Locals describe both victims as soft-spoken and say the relationship, though frowned upon by some elders, was well-known in the area. Many residents believe societal pressure and family honour sentiments played a decisive role in the killings.

Police are now examining call records, mobile locations, and CCTV footage from surrounding areas to piece together the timeline of events. Sources say they are also investigating whether more people were involved in the conspiracy.

Meanwhile, Puchchu’s father has expressed shock over his son’s actions, though he admitted the family had repeatedly warned her to end the relationship. The absconding brother’s arrest is expected to provide further clarity on whether the murders were premeditated jointly or carried out in a fit of rage.
