Padma Shri awardee Jamuna Tudu, often hailed as ‘Lady Tarzan’ for her fearless campaign against deforestation, is back in the national spotlight. Known for confronting timber mafias and mobilising villagers to protect forests in Jharkhand, Tudu has now received a rare honour – an invitation from the President to attend the Independence Day dinner at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The official invitation, sent under special postal arrangements from New Delhi to her hometown Chakulia, clearly states that Tudu has been invited to join the ceremonial dinner on August 15 at 6 pm.

For someone who once earned her livelihood as a daily-wage labourer while her husband worked as a mason, the journey to the country’s most prestigious address is nothing short of extraordinary. Her transformation from a forest protector with a stick in hand to a national icon with a Padma Shri pinned to her name has inspired thousands across the country.

Tudu became a symbol of resistance against illegal logging when she began patrolling the forests alone, confronting loggers, and raising awareness among local communities. Over time, she gathered a dedicated group of women to join her cause, forming what would become a grassroots forest-protection movement. Despite facing multiple life-threatening attacks by those with vested interests in forest exploitation, she never backed down.

It was this relentless spirit that earned her the nickname ‘Lady Tarzan’, a name that now echoes across the nation whenever environmental courage is discussed.

Speaking on the invitation, Jamuna Tudu said, “This invitation from Rashtrapati Bhavan is a great joy and honour," adding, “It will not only boost my morale, but will also inspire other women working in the field of environmental protection. This invitation is a great proof of my struggle and selfless service."
