Pressure continues to mount on Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim after his team’s horrible start to the Premier League 2025-26 season. Given the responsibility to revive a Red Devils side that had one of its worst-ever seasons last year, Amorim could be facing a sack after reports suggested co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe met him to get an assessment behind their ongoing decline.

United, which finished 15th in the Premier League last summer and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur in the 2024-25 season, is currently 14th in England’s top tier with just four points from their first four games.

A 3-0 defeat at the hands of local rivals Manchester City last weekend further piled on their troubles and scrutiny for Amorim, who could be forced out of the job.

Since joining United in November 2024, Amorim has recorded only eight victories in a disastrous run in the Premier League. He also holds the unwanted record of maintaining the lowest win percentage of any permanent United manager since World War II, losing 18 of his overall 47 games in charge.

While it would be unfair to put the blame for the struggles of an in-transition Red Devils outfit entirely on Amorim, a report in the Mirror suggested he could be in for a premature sacking under his contract. The report claimed United’s next three fixtures against Chelsea, Brentford and Sunderland could be his final opportunity to revive the side and keep his job.

Athletic FC journalist Laurie Whitwell also revealed the arrival of co-owner Ratcliffe at United’s training ground on Thursday, September 18, for a crucial discussion with Amorim. “Sir Jim Ratcliffe flew into Carrington by helicopter today for series of planned meetings including with Ruben Amorim. Team’s form on the agenda, but Ratcliffe wants to work through issues with Amorim."

With a poor record at hand, Amorim is believed to be losing the confidence of some of his senior players. However, the head coach stood adamant about his ways and backed his team to turn the tables around.

“There are a lot of things that you have no idea what happened during these months, but I accept that. But I’m not going to change. When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man," Amorim had said after the loss against City.

If United decides to part ways with their coach, Oliver Glasner, Gareth Southgate, Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola are reportedly in line to replace him.
