After months of speculation and informal involvement, Hall of Famer Joe Thornton has officially joined the San Jose Sharks’ front office. The Sharks announced his appointment as a Player Development Coach/Hockey Operations Advisor on Tuesday as part of a broader reshuffling.
Thornton, who had been a visible figure throughout the 2024–25 season, now holds his first official post with the franchise he long represented on the ice.

Joe Thornton’s long-anticipated addition to the San Jose Sharks staff is now official. The franchise legend, affectionately known as “Jumbo,” has been named Player Development Coach and Hockey Operations Advisor. Although he spent the 2024–25 season frequently around the team, attending events and development sessions, he had not been under contract until now.General manager Mike Grier had hinted at this move earlier in the offseason, admitting that Thornton was “a hard guy to track down” but expressing hope that a deal would eventually get done. Grier noted that Thornton had already been contributing voluntarily in a development capacity, helping young players for the love of the game. That informal support has now been solidified into an official position.Thornton was notably present on the ice during the Sharks’ development camp in early July, offering guidance and experience to prospects in person.
San Jose Sharks elevate Charlie Townsend in front office overhaul
Alongside Thornton’s official addition, the San Jose Sharks also announced a key promotion within their front office. Charlie Townsend has been elevated to Director of Hockey Operations. Townsend had previously held the title of Director of Hockey Projects and Analytics from 2023 to 2025.With over a decade of experience in the organization, Townsend’s new role signals the Sharks’ continued investment in data-driven decision-making and long-term strategic planning.
His promotion further stabilizes a growing leadership group under Grier’s tenure as general manager.
