The Verstappen name has once again been at the centre of a frightening motorsport incident.
Just a week after the tragic death of Juha Miettinen at the Nürburgring, it was Jos Verstappen who found himself in danger, this time in Belgium.
The 54-year-old, father of four-time F1 world champion Max Verstappen, was forced to retire from the Rallye de Wallonie after a heavy crash during the Loyers special stage on Sunday.
According to organisers, Verstappen lost control of his car before slamming into a tree, sending his Skoda into a roll.
The incident was described as a “violent crash" in official updates shared on social media.
Despite the severity of the accident, both Verstappen and his co-driver Jasper Vermeulen escaped unharmed.
However, the damage to the car was extensive, leaving the team with no choice but to withdraw from the rally.
Verstappen entered the event as the reigning Belgian Rally Champion, having enjoyed a strong run in recent seasons. But this year’s campaign has already seen disruption. He competed in this edition without his regular co-driver Renaud Jamoul, who is currently sidelined following ankle surgery. The enforced change added another layer of challenge in an already demanding rally.
A Troubling Pattern Across Motorsport
This latest scare adds to a worrying stretch for motorsport globally.
The fatal accident involving Miettinen was followed almost immediately by another serious incident at the Rally Sudamericano Mina Clavero in Argentina, where a crash reportedly killed a spectator and injured two others, according to the FIA.
While the outcome in Belgium could have been far worse, the sequence of recent events has once again raised concerns around safety in motorsport — for both competitors and spectators.
