The Kalaignar International Convention Centre in Muttukadu, which is among Tamil Nadu’s flagship initiatives, is set to be ready by February 2026. Public Works Minister E.V. Velu on Monday (October 27, 2025) reviewed the ongoing work to construct the convention centre with various infrastructure facilities.

Aimed to position Chennai as a prominent destination for big-ticket events, work is in progress to construct a second floor of the structure at the site spread over 37.99 acres.

The Public Works Department started the ₹525-crore project in May this year. The convention centre is coming up in a plinth area of 2.08 lakh sq.ft. to host conferences and major events, said a press release.

The building will include a 91,924 sq. ft exhibition hall that would accommodate 10,000 people, a convention hall with a seating capacity of 5,000, and a 1,500-seat auditorium. The centre will also have dining halls and parking space for 1,638 four-wheelers and 1,700 two-wheelers.

Once completed, the convention centre will establish a global identity for Tamil Nadu, said Mr. Velu. Senior officials, including Mangat Ram Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary, PWD, were present.
