Sarvepalli MLA Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy has expressed concern that the Karnataka Cabinet passed a resolution in its meeting a few days ago to increase the height of the Almatti dam from 519 feet to 524 feet to draw 130 tmcft of Krishna river water.
The Andhra Pradesh Government should enquire about it to ensure that the State got its rightful share of the water as per the norms laid down by the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal, Mr. Chandramohan Reddy said while participating in a Short Discussion on irrigation in the Legislative Assembly on Friday.
Mr. Chandramohan Reddy said the Karnataka Cabinet planned to spend around ₹70,000 crore on increasing the dam height and land acquisition.
Besides, the Telangana Government prepared DPRs for a total of 16 projects on the Krishna river to utilise 150 tmcft, he said. The projects contemplated by the Karnataka and Telangana governments would harm Andhra Pradesh’s interests over the next three years, he feared. The A.P. government should be alert and take necessary steps to protect its right to draw the allocated Krishna river water, he added.
Deputy Speaker K. Raghu Ramakrishna Raju stated that the issue was of serious concern as the projects might deprive the A.P.’s share of Krishna waters if the government did not act promptly.
