Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is likely to tender his resignation on Thursday, sources told India Today, in what could mark a major political transition in the Congress-ruled state.
The development comes amid intense speculation over a leadership change in Karnataka and shortly after closed-door meetings between the state leadership and the Congress high command in Delhi.
Sources said the Congress leadership has been pushing for Siddaramaiah to move to national politics through the Rajya Sabha and take up a larger role in Delhi ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
The veteran leader was reportedly projected by the party as a key OBC face who could strengthen the Congress’s social justice outreach nationally.
The possible resignation also comes against the backdrop of a prolonged power-sharing tussle within the Karnataka Congress, with Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar and his supporters repeatedly asserting claims over a rotational chief ministership arrangement after the 2023 Assembly elections.
