The protest by sugarcane farmers in the State demanding a higher price for their produce entered its eighth day in Belagavi on Thursday.

The Karnataka government on Friday decided to set the price of sugarcane at Rs 3,300 per tonne. Sugar factories will pay Rs 3,250 per tonne, with the government contributing an additional Rs 50 to bring the total to Rs 3,300 per tonne for farmers, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said.
He further stated that all sugar factory owners have agreed to the new price structure. He urged them to support farmers in distress and requested farmers to withdraw their protest to help maintain law and order. Notably, the cost of harvesting and transportation is not included in this price.

Siddaramaiah took to X and shared the development through several posts. “After a continuous seven-hour meeting held in connection with resolving the problems of sugarcane growers, she participated in a press conference and spoke. The key points of the press conference are as follows: We have arrived at a firm decision by prioritizing the welfare of the state’s farmers. It has been decided to provide ₹3,300 per ton of sugarcane. The government and factory owners will contribute ₹50 each to provide ₹3,300 per ton to the farmers," an excerpt from Siddaramaiah’s post reads.

At a meeting, Karnataka Law Minister HK Patil mentioned that the Chief Minister asked the sugar factory owners to consider the farmers’ plight and increase the price by Rs 50, leading to the government adding another Rs 50 to reach the total of Rs 3,300 per tonne. Most mill owners accepted the proposal.
Furthermore, Siddaramaiah also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking an urgent appointment to discuss the ongoing agitation by the farmers.
