The State government would appoint over 11,000 schoolteachers to reduce long pending vacancies in the Department of Education, Madhu Bangarappa, Minister for School Education and Literacy, said on Thursday.

Responding to queries by members Harish Poonja and Sharanu Salagar in the Assembly, he said that the process of recruitment would begin soon.

He said the government was not opposed the idea of having English teachers in government schools.

“We have already begun hiring bilingual teachers, who can teach English and other subjects. We will continue doing this and see that all schools, including Kannada medium and other medium schools, have teachers who teach English as a subject,” he said.

To a question on teachers being assigned non-academic duties like census and election-related work, the Minister said he was not personally inclined to it, but there was no alternative.

“We are bound by several directives of the Union government that ask us to depute teachers for such duties. It is also due to the general realisation that such a large number of employees that are so skilled and credible are found only in the Education Department,’’ he said.
