A 44-year-old man lost his life in a tragic road accident in Athani after a stray dog chased his motorcycle, causing him to lose control and crash into a house wall.

The deceased has been identified as Vishwanath Shirol. The incident took place on January 15 in the Kumbara Galli area of Athani, located in Belagavi district, but came to light only recently after police reviewed CCTV footage from the locality.

Initially, locals believed Shirol had died in a routine motorcycle accident. However, security camera footage later showed that a stray dog had been chasing him moments before the crash. While trying to avoid being bitten, Shirol appeared to panic, lost balance and rammed his bike into the wall of a residential building, suffering fatal injuries.

Family members said Shirol had an intense fear of dogs, stemming from a previous stray dog bite incident. He was the sole earning member of his family and is survived by his wife and three children.

The incident has triggered widespread anger among residents of Athani, who have raised concerns over the increasing stray dog population in the town. Many have demanded urgent intervention by civic authorities to prevent similar tragedies.

The case is being investigated by the Athani Police Station.
