Karnataka plans ‘Namma Guide’ website & app to connect tourists with local guides

Bengaluru: In an era where travellers expect seamless digital services, the Karnataka tourism department is preparing to bridge a long-standing gap in the state’s tourism ecosystem.

From the ancient ruins of Hampi and the royal grandeur of Mysuru to the mist-covered hills of Malnad, tourists often struggle to access authentic and reliable information about the destinations they visit.

The proposed ‘Namma Guide’ platform aims to address this challenge by connecting visitors with trained local guides through a dedicated digital interface. The department plans to develop a website and mobile application that will enable domestic and international tourists to easily identify, book and interact with registered guides.

The initiative draws inspiration from successful global models where guide services are integrated into digital tourism platforms, making travel more informative, convenient and immersive.Officials believe the platform could be a game changer not only for tourists but also for hundreds of registered guides across Karnataka by creating new employment opportunities and enhancing the visibility of their services.

Beyond guiding visitors, the department envisions a larger role for local guides as ambassadors of Karnataka’s heritage and custodians of its tourist destinations. By actively involving guides in promoting cleanliness, responsible tourism and site management, the govt hopes to enhance the overall visitor experience and strengthen the state’s tourism brand.Fast-tracking the project, the tourism department plans to invite start-ups and technology-driven firms from Karnataka to develop the platform. “Local guides are the storytellers of Karnataka’s heritage. Through Namma Guide, we aim to make guide services transparent, accessible and globally competitive. The platform will help tourists discover the true essence of our destinations while creating new opportunities for guides and improving the upkeep of tourist sites,” said KJ George, minister for energy and tourism.
