The political atmosphere in Karnataka has reached a fever pitch following the conclusion of the state budget session, as Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s strategic visit to New Delhi fuels fresh speculation regarding a long-rumoured leadership transition.
While Shivakumar officially maintains that his trip is centred on party organisational work including the induction of leaders and attending a family wedding, his presence in the national capital has been interpreted by many as a push for the implementation of a power-sharing pact. Speaking to reporters at Karnataka Bhawan, Shivakumar remained characteristically elusive about his specific meetings, quipping that he cannot publicly disclose his itinerary. “I meet everyone when I come to Delhi," he remarked, adding that he is often reported as “waiting" for senior leaders and thus must be doing so. He further clarified that his focus remains on his duties as KPCC President, noting that he is hosting a major dinner party for legislators tomorrow to mark his six-year anniversary in the role.
However, the opposition BJP has dismissed the Deputy Chief Minister’s claims of a routine visit, asserting that the internal struggle for the Chief Minister’s chair has entered a decisive phase. Senior BJP leader Suresh Kumar alleged that Shivakumar has been biding his time, specifically waiting for the presentation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s record seventeenth budget before moving to secure his claim to the top post.
This narrative of a deepening divide is bolstered by recent defiant statements from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who recently signalled his desire for a full term. During a public interaction, Siddaramaiah asserted his readiness to continue his tenure, stating, “I will present two more budgets if the high command allows me." He emphasised that while the final decision rests with the party leadership, he has full confidence in their support. As both leaders signal their respective positions, all eyes now turn to the high command’s next move and the significance of tomorrow’s legislative dinner in Bengaluru.
