Karnataka rain: Downpour in parts of Malnad region, schools closed, damage in Bidanur fort, inflow to reservoirs increase

Shivamogga

Two houses collapsed in Sakleshpur in Karnataka due to heavy rains on August 17 night. One house at Hosur belongs to Gangamma and the other, at Goddu village, to Sannappa Gowda.

Sannappa Gowda suffered minor injuries in the incident. He has been admitted to a hospital in Sakleshpur for treatment.

A portion of the historic Bidanur fort at Nagara in Hosanagara taluk of Shivamogga district collapsed due to heavy rains on August 17 night. According to local people, a part of an old pond collapsed.

Many parts of the Malnad region received heavy rains on August 17 night. In the 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m on August 18, Begar in Sringeri taluk of Chikkamagaluru district recorded 170.5 mm of rainfall. Melpal in N.R. Pura taluk registered 168 mm. Byakaravalli in Sakleshpur taluk of Hassan district recorded 122.5 mm. Hongadahalla, also in Sakleshpur taluk, registered 118.5 mm. Hosahalli in Tirthahalli in Shivamogga district recorded 107.5 mm.

The IMD has warned of extremely heavy rains with strong surface winds in south interior Karnataka on August 18. Officials are expecting very heavy rain over the next two days.

Increase in inflow into reservoirs

The inflow at Tunga reservoir at Gajanur, as of August 18 morning, was 73,415 cusecs. The outflow was 76,656 cusecs. The crest gates have been opened as the water level reached the maximum level.

The water level in Linganmakki dam stands at 1,815.05 feet against the full reservoir level of 1,819 feet. The inflow is 59,891 cusecs. The live capacity is 138.55 TMC, against the total live capacity of 151.64 TMC.

The inflow to Bhadra reservoir at Lakkavalli is 34,430 cusecs, and the outflow is 39,245 cusecs.

Holiday for schools in Shivamogga district

The district administration of Shivamogga has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in the district on August 18. In neighbouring Chikkamagaluru district, the DC has announced a holiday for schools in six taluks. In Hassan district, the administration declared a holiday for schools in Belur, Sakleshpur taluks, and K. Hoskote Hobli in Alur taluk.
