The discharge from KRS reservoir near Mysuru has been stepped up in view of the heavy rains in its catchment areas in Kodagu district of Karnataka.

According to a statement from the office of Deputy Commissioner of Mandya district, the outflow from the reservoir had been increased to 80,000 cusecs from 10 a.m. on August 18.

The outflow from the reservoir, whose level was 124.54 feet against the maximum reservoir level of 124.8 feet, was 31,550 cusecs at 8 am.

Authorities have advised people living in low-lying areas to shift to safer places along with their cattle. Water Resources Department officials said that release of water from KRS reservoir can be further increased.

Authorities have prohibited people from going to the banks of rivers. People have been prohibited from visiting bridges, swimming in rivers or taking selfies.

Holiday for schools in Kodagu district

With the IMD declaring orange alert for Kodagu on August 18, Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja declared a holiday for educational institutions in the district.

According to an official statement, the Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu announced a holiday for all anganwadis, primary schools, high schools and pre-university colleges on August 18 in view of the orange alert.

Authorities were expecting heavy rains accompanied by winds in Kodagu district on August 18.
