Many parts of the Malnad region in Karnataka received widespread rainfall on Tuesday, causing landslips in Chikkamagaluru and Hassan districts which affected traffic movement and disrupted daily life.

Multiple landslips were reported on the road that connects the hill stations of Chandradrona range to Chikkamagaluru. Normal vehicular movement was resumed after the debris was cleared by police.

Advisory to tourists

Chikkamagaluru Deputy Commissioner Meena Nagaraj on Wednesday issued an advisory to the tourists planning to visit the district, suggesting them to postpone their trip to the hill stations Mullayyanagiri and Sri Guru Dattatreya Bababudan Swamy Dargah until September 14, in view of the landslips and heavy rains.

The Deputy Commissioner issued the advisory note based on a report provided by the officers of the Revenue Department who visted the spot where the landslips had taken place.

Begar in Sringeri taluk received 121.5 mm of rainfall, the highest in the district, during the 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday. Melpal in N.R. Pura taluk, Dharekoppa in Sringeri taluk, and Kammaradi in Koppa taluk also received heavy rains.

Chikkamagaluru recorded an average rainfall of 20 mm on the day, against 6 mm received during the last 24 hours. In the last seven days, the district received an average rainfall of 124 mm against the normal of 44 mm.

Many parts of Shivamogga, including villages in Sagar, Hosanagar, and Tirthahalli, received moderate to heavy rains. The district received 25 mm of rainfall against the normal of 9 mm in the last 24 hours. In the last seven days, it recorded an average of 182 mm against the normal of 65 mm.

Landslips at Bisale Ghat

The movement of vehicles on the road connecting Bisale in Sakleshpur taluk of Hassan and Subrahmanya in Dakshina Kannada was severely affected following landslips at Bisale Ghat on Wednesday. Due to heavy rains in the region, masses of rocks and soil moved down near Addahole blocking the State highway. Authorities cleared the debris after they were informed about the incident by locals.

Hassan received an average rainfall of 10 mm against the normal of 5 mm in the 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday. In the last seven days, the district received an average rainfall of 59 mm against the normal of 29 mm.
