In a shocking incident, an elderly woman who went missing from Kooguru village in Anekal taluk near Bengaluru was killed, then kept hidden inside a house for two days, and later dumped near a lake, Karnataka police said.
The crime was uncovered after an investigation by Sarjapur Police, who arrested a woman named Deepa for the alleged murder of 68-year-old Bhadramma, who had gone missing on October 30, as per reports.
According to police, a missing person complaint was lodged on October 31 after extensive searches by family members and villagers failed to locate the elderly woman. Police then began a wide-area search operation around the village.
Days later, on November 6, police received a crucial lead indicating that Bhadramma was last seen visiting the home of a woman named Deepa, who lived in the same village.
Acting on this information, police detained Deepa for questioning.
During interrogation, she confessed to the murder, revealing a chilling chain of events.
Deepa told investigators that she allegedly lured Bhadramma to her home by offering her kajjaya, a traditional sweet, and then strangled her to steal her gold chain. After the murder, Deepa placed the body in a large bag and kept it inside her house for two days.
As the odour from decomposition grew, the cops said, she transferred the body into another bag.
She then called her son, telling him they needed to throw out garbage, police said.
Together, they allegedly carried the body to Doddathimmasandra Lake and dumped it among the bushes near the lakebed, according to police.
Deepa reportedly continued her daily routine in the village and denied any involvement when questioned by the victim’s family.
Police later recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. A murder case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code at Sarjapur Police Station.
Preliminary investigations suggest that greed for gold was the motive behind the crime. Police are now probing the possible involvement of other family members and are working to trace the missing jewellery and additional evidence.
Further investigation is ongoing.
