Kerala Congress (M) [KC(M)] chairperson Jose K. Mani has alleged dubious intentions behind the Election Commission of India’s plan to drastically revise the voters’ list across the country.

“A total of 65 lakh voters lost their voting rights due to the drastic revision of the voters’ list carried out in Bihar. The case regarding this is still pending in the Supreme Court. The Election Commission’s move to drastically revise the voters’ list in all States before the final verdict is a challenge to the legal system,” he said.

Mr. Mani also highlighted that the Election Commission wants people born before July 1, 1987, to provide their parents’ birth certificates as proof. “The Election Commission has listed 11 documents to prove the voting right. The Supreme Court suggested adding the Aadhaar card as a 12th document. The Election Commission is strongly opposing this proposal in the ongoing case in the Supreme Court,” he said.

“In Bihar, where many allegations have been made regarding the voters’ list, the last time a special intensive revision of the voters’ list was carried out in 2003. In Kerala, this was last done in 2002, he said. Mr. Mani also pointed out that people are afraid that a repeat of Bihar will happen in Kerala, where Assembly elections are due in 2026.
